The Real Hilton Head Weather Month-by-Month (From a Local)

Hilton Head weather, month by month, by someone who lives here. Real water temps, real rain risk, and which trip type fits which month.

Spartina grass and tidal pools across a salt marsh at golden hour

Most month-by-month Hilton Head weather pages are AI-generated tables copy-pasted from generic Lowcountry averages. The numbers in those tables are off by enough to ruin a trip — particularly the water-temperature numbers and the rain-risk averages. This is what it actually feels like here, month by month, written from living on the island.

Use this with the standalone monthly pages — January, March, April, June, October, December — for the deeper drill-downs.

Month-by-month, the real version

Q1

January — quiet, cheap, and underrated

Snowbird month. Mid-50s water. Locked-in rates.

January on Hilton Head is the calmest month of the year. Highs run 58°F, lows around 40°F. Cold snaps drop into the high-20s for two or three nights a year and then bounce back. The water is mid-50s — you are not swimming, but you are walking the beach in a fleece and feeling deeply okay about the world. Restaurants are at 30 to 40% capacity and the dinner reservations are walk-in easy. Best for: snowbird stays, winter rentals, romantic weekend escapes. Worst for: anyone expecting to swim, anyone who needs the marina open for dolphin tours. Full details on the January page and the winter rental landing.

Q1

February — second month of the snowbird quiet

Slightly warmer than January. Same dynamics.

February is January with a couple more degrees and slightly longer days. Highs in the low-60s, lows in the low-40s. Water still cold. The first hint of warmth happens in the last week — a 70°F day or two slips into the forecast. Best for: golf trips for cold-weather refugees, snowbirds, off-season couples weekends. Restaurants are still on shoulder hours but full menus are in operation.

Q1

March — the shoulder turns

Air warms up. Water still cool. Spring-break starts late month.

March is the inflection month. The first week feels like February — high 60s, low 50s water. By the last week, highs are pushing 75°F and water is 65 to 68°F. Air-temperature spring-break weather is comfortable by mid-month; water-temperature spring-break is comfortable only in the last week. Best for: spring break families with older kids (the cooler water doesn't bother teens as much as it bothers 5-year-olds), early golf trips, and couples who want the island before the crowds arrive. Detail on the March page.

Q2

April — the best month of the year

Heritage Week is the exception. Otherwise, the cleanest weather on the calendar.

April is the closest the Hilton Head climate gets to perfect. Highs in the mid-70s, lows around 60°F, water 67°F by mid-month and 70°F by month-end. Air is dry, breeze is light, mornings are 64°F-and-bright. The one exception is Heritage Week — the second full week of April — which becomes a tournament week with all the side effects, see the spring break post. Outside of Heritage Week, April is the best month for golf trips, the best month for couples weekends, and one of the two best months for weddings. Full details on the April page.

Q2

May — water swimmable for everyone

The first family-friendly month. Pre-summer prices.

May is when the water hits 74°F and stays there — the threshold where 7-year-olds will happily spend three hours in the ocean. Air temperatures are mid-80s, humidity is creeping up but not oppressive. Afternoon thunderstorms are occasional but not the every-day pattern they will be by July. Best for: families who can shift their school calendar earlier, weddings, and second-trip clients who want summer water without summer rates. Rates are 18 to 25% below June peak.

Q2

June — the family peak begins

80°F water. 88°F days. Afternoon storms.

June is the start of family peak season. Schools are out the second week. Water is 80°F. Air is 88°F. Afternoon thunderstorms become a near-daily 30% probability, usually between 3pm and 6pm, lasting 30 to 60 minutes. The local rhythm shifts: beach in the morning, lunch, nap or pool, beach again at 4:30pm after the storm passes. Best for: families with school-age kids, big-group reunions. Full breakdown on the June page.

Q3

July — hottest month of the year

91°F days. 84°F water. Crowds peak.

July is the hottest month — highs 91°F, water 84°F, humidity 80%+. The morning beach window is the best time of the day; by 1pm the sand is too hot for bare feet. Afternoon thunderstorms continue. This is also the peak crowd month, with the July 4 week and the two weeks following it functionally booked out across the island. If you want July, see our last-call July inventory post.

Q3

August — same as July, with hurricane risk starting

Last full peak month. Hurricane season begins to bite.

August feels identical to July weather-wise but the hurricane risk starts climbing. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, but real Hilton Head risk window is August 20 through October 10. August trips are still typically fine, but it's the first month where checking the NOAA hurricane outlook before locking dates is genuinely worth doing. See our hurricane forecast post for the framework.

Q3

September — the smartest month for most people

Post-Labor Day quiet. Warm water. Lower rates.

September is the most underrated month on the calendar. Post-Labor Day, the crowds drop by 60% overnight. Water stays at 82°F through the month. Air temperatures sit in the mid-80s with the humidity easing slightly. Rates drop 22 to 30% from summer peak. The one caveat is hurricane risk — September 10 through October 10 is the peak Atlantic hurricane window. Trip insurance matters more in this month than any other. We send roughly 30% of our annual client volume here now.

Q4

October — the second-best month of the year

Golf prime, foodie weekends, post-hurricane calm.

October is April's autumn twin. Highs in the high-70s, water still 76°F through mid-month, air dry, breezes off the ocean. The post-hurricane window opens by October 10 and the rest of the month is one of the lowest-risk weather periods of the year. Best for: golf trips (this is when locals book their best rounds), couples weekends, foodie weekends, and late-season weddings. Full breakdown on the October page.

Q4

November — Thanksgiving and the back end of the season

Mid-60s highs. Thanksgiving week is the only peak.

November is mid-60s highs, mid-40s lows, mostly dry. The water is still 67°F early month and 60°F by month-end — wading temperature only. Thanksgiving week is the one peak window in an otherwise quiet month, with restaurants booking out three weeks ahead. Outside of Thanksgiving week, the rest of the month is one of the lowest-rate periods of the year. See the Thanksgiving page for the specific week.

Q4

December — quiet winter, holiday couples

Low-60s highs. First weeks are off-peak. Christmas is a small peak.

December returns to January's calm pattern — low-60s highs, low-40s lows, dry. The first two weeks are the cheapest of the year on the island. Christmas week is the only winter peak — Sea Pines decorates Harbour Town with lights and families come back for the holidays. Best for: romantic winter escapes, holiday couples, and snowbird stays starting. Detail on the December page.

Hilton Head weather FAQ
What is the best month to visit Hilton Head?
October for adults and couples; May or early June for families with kids who need warm water. April is the close second for both categories, with the caveat that Heritage Week is the exception. September is the smartest pick if you're flexible and willing to track the hurricane outlook.
How warm is the water at Hilton Head in June?
June water averages 80°F. By the last week, it's 82°F. This is the first month of the year where the water is unambiguously swimmable for everyone in the family, including young kids who would otherwise complain about cold.
When is hurricane season on Hilton Head?
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, but the real Hilton Head risk window is mid-August through mid-October, with peak risk September 10 through October 10. We track the NOAA outlook for any client trip in that window and have written a full hurricane planning guide.
Does Hilton Head get cold in winter?
Cold by Lowcountry standards, mild by anywhere else's standards. Highs run 58 to 62°F December through February, lows in the low 40s. A handful of nights drop into the high 20s. Most of the winter is fleece-and-beach-walk weather rather than coat-and-stay-inside weather.
Is it humid in Hilton Head?
Yes, in summer. June through August humidity runs 75 to 85%, which compounds the heat. From October through May, humidity sits at 55 to 70% and is rarely noticeable. The first cool-air shift each fall typically arrives around October 8 to 15.
What month has the least rain on Hilton Head?
Statistically, October and November tie for the lowest rainfall — about 2 to 2.5 inches across the month. June through August see 5 to 6 inches each, mostly from afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day rain.
