The Perfect Hilton Head Weekend Getaway: Charlotte, Atlanta & Savannah
Four hours from Charlotte, four hours from Atlanta, 45 minutes from Savannah. Here's the exact route, a 2-night and 3-night itinerary, and what to do with the time you have.
Hilton Head is one of the most underrated long-weekend destinations on the East Coast — not because it's obscure, but because most people assume it's a week-long trip. It isn't. Charlotte is 4.5 hours away. Atlanta is 4 hours. Savannah is 45 minutes. You can leave Friday at 2pm and have your feet in the sand before dinner. Here's how to do it right.
Getting there: from Charlotte
The Charlotte to Hilton Head drive is one of the most painless coastal routes in the South — almost entirely interstate until the final 15 miles. Realistic drive time: 4 to 4.5 hours without stops, depending on I-26 traffic through Columbia.
- Take I-77 S from Charlotte to I-26 E toward Columbia (about 90 minutes)
- Stay on I-26 E through Columbia — this is your halfway point, good for gas and coffee
- Pick up I-95 S at the junction near Santee (about 30 minutes past Columbia)
- Exit onto US-278 E toward Hilton Head Island at Exit 8 — 30 more minutes across Bluffton
- Stop in Old Town Bluffton before crossing the bridge — it's 10 minutes off route, walkable, and worth a quick stretch
Getting there: from Atlanta
Atlanta to Hilton Head is about 4 hours on a good traffic day. The route goes south through Macon before cutting east toward Savannah and the coast.
- Take I-75 S from Atlanta through Macon (about 90 minutes)
- Exit at I-16 E toward Savannah — straight, easy highway for 90 miles
- Pick up I-95 N just outside Savannah — drive 20 miles north
- Take Exit 8 onto US-278 E — Hilton Head Island is 30 minutes east
- Savannah detour option: If you leave Atlanta early, drop off the highway in Savannah for 2–3 hours (brunch, River Street walk, Forsyth Park) before finishing the drive. Savannah to Hilton Head is 45 min.
Getting there: from Savannah
Savannah sits 40 miles from Hilton Head via US-278 — an easy 45-minute drive. The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is the closest major airport to the island, making it a natural feeder for both fly-drive trips and Savannah-combination weekends.
The classic combination: Friday night in Savannah (dinner on River Street, ghost tour, stay in the historic district) → Saturday and Sunday on Hilton Head. The two places have completely different vibes — Savannah's cobblestones vs. Hilton Head's beach trails — and work well as a pair.
2-night weekend itinerary
Arriving Friday afternoon, leaving Sunday. This is the most common format — efficient and genuinely satisfying if you pick the right base.
| Time | Activity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 5–6pm | Arrive, check in | Mid-island location best for 2-night trips — central to everything |
| Friday 7pm | Dinner: casual arrival meal | Skull Creek Dockside or Charlie's L'Etoile Verte — nothing fancy, get your bearings |
| Saturday 8am | Morning beach walk or bike ride | Rent bikes the night before if possible — shops close early |
| Saturday 10am | Beach setup | Choose a beach based on your vibe: Coligny (lively) or Folly Field (quiet) |
| Saturday 1pm | Lunch at a beach bar | Reilley's Grill & Bar or Coligny beach area options |
| Saturday 3pm | Optional activity | Dolphin tour, kayak rental, or golf afternoon if your group plays |
| Saturday 7pm | Dinner | Book this in advance — The Boathouse at Harbour Town or One Hot Mama's for something memorable |
| Sunday 8am | Early beach walk or Harbour Town coffee | Harbour Town has a coffee shop with marina views — excellent before the drive home |
| Sunday 10am | Depart | Head out before 10am to avoid Sunday afternoon traffic on I-95/I-26 |
3-night weekend itinerary
Three nights — Thursday or Friday arrival, Monday morning departure — is the format where Hilton Head really opens up. You have time for golf, a dolphin tour, a nicer dinner, and still have a lazy beach day.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | Drive — depart by noon if coming from Charlotte/Atlanta | Arrive, check in, grocery run to stock villa | Casual dinner, early night |
| Saturday | Beach day — full morning | Dolphin tour or kayak tour (~2.5 hours, departs early afternoon) | Dinner at a waterfront restaurant (make a reservation) |
| Sunday | Golf if applicable — tee time at 8am | Harbour Town walk, lighthouse climb, shopping | Best dinner of the trip — Hudson's or Poseidon |
| Monday | Early morning beach walk (best light of the trip) | Depart by 9–10am | — |
Where to stay for a long weekend
For a 2–3 night weekend trip, villa location matters more than it does on a week-long trip. You want to minimize driving on the island. If beach time tops the agenda, our oceanfront villa picks shortlist the buildings where you walk straight to the sand.
- 01
Palmetto Dunes (mid-island)
Best all-around weekend baseCentral to restaurants, golf, and beach activities. The 11-mile lagoon system is great for morning kayaking. Three championship courses on property. Strong villa inventory across price points.
- 02
Forest Beach / Coligny area
Best for beach-first weekendersWalking distance to Coligny Beach Park, bike rentals, and half a dozen casual restaurants. Best for groups who want to minimize driving. Not the most scenic setting but wildly practical for a 48-hour beach trip.
- 03
Sea Pines (south end)
Best for a splurge or golf weekendHarbour Town is here. The Salty Dog is here. Three golf courses and the Forest Preserve are here. If you want the full Hilton Head experience in two nights and price is secondary, book into Sea Pines.
What to eat in a long weekend
You have roughly five or six meal slots on a long weekend. Here's how to allocate them:
- Friday night arrival dinner: Casual, no reservation needed. Skull Creek Dockside, Reilley's, or Fish Camp Bar & Grill.
- Saturday lunch: Grab-and-go near the beach. Rock Fish Seafood & Chicken, Big Bamboo Cafe.
- Saturday dinner: The one you book in advance. Hudson's Seafood House, Poseidon, or The Boathouse.
- Sunday morning: Coffee and pastry at Harbour Town Marina (Brown Dog Deli is right there) before a late checkout.
- Road-trip fuel (Bluffton stop): Old Town Bluffton's May River Coffee is the best coffee between I-95 and the island — worth a stop.
Weekend trip by season
| Season | Months | Vibe | Crowds | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March–May | Warm, green, RBC Heritage buzz in April | Building — manageable | Lower than summer | Best overall weekend window |
| Summer | June–August | Hot, full beach scene, families | Peak | Highest | Fun but book 4+ weeks out |
| Fall | September–November | Cooler evenings, uncrowded, best fishing | Low | Drops 30–50% from summer | Best value weekend — our recommendation |
| Winter | December–February | Quiet, locals-only feel | Very low | Lowest | Great for couples, not for beach swimmers |
- Is Hilton Head worth a long weekend (vs. a full week)?
- Yes — completely. A 3-night weekend covers the highlights: a beach day, an activity (golf, dolphin tour, kayaking), and two good dinners. What you lose with less time is the slower pace — the afternoon nap on the beach, the second-round-of-golf feeling. If your schedule allows a week, take it. But a 3-night trip is not a compromise.
- Can I do Hilton Head without a car?
- Not easily for a weekend trip. The island has a seasonal trolley (Breeze Transit) and Uber/Lyft, but coverage is limited. Renting a golf cart on the island is a fun and practical option for getting around within a neighborhood. But to get from the highway to the island, you need a car or a rideshare from Savannah.
- Best time to visit Hilton Head for a weekend?
- September and October are our strongest recommendation — fall light, warm water (still 78°F in September), no summer crowds, and prices that are 30–50% lower than July. April is a close second: the island is beautiful in spring and the RBC Heritage golf tournament adds an optional bonus activity.
- Should I fly into Savannah or Charlotte for a Hilton Head weekend?
- Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is the obvious choice — 45 minutes from the island. Charleston (CHS, about 2 hours north) is a solid backup with more flight options. Atlanta (ATL) is 4 hours driving but has the most flights. If you're coming from the Northeast, flying to SAV is usually the most efficient option.
