Hilton Head in Winter: The Month-by-Month Snowbird Guide
55-68°F days, half-price villas, and a quiet island that feels unlocked. Here's exactly what November through March looks like on Hilton Head.
Hilton Head November through March is the island most visitors never see. Days run 55-68°F, nights 40-50°F, villa rates drop 50-55% below summer, and the bike paths, beaches, and wildlife refuges stay beautiful. Thirty to ninety-day snowbird rentals are increasingly the smart play, and we've planned enough of them to know which months, neighborhoods, and logistics matter. Here is the full picture.
Hilton Head winter at a glance
Five winter months, each distinct. Here is the month-by-month breakdown with weather, water temperature, rental cost index, and what stays open. Rental cost index is relative to the July peak at 100. The lower the number, the cheaper the month.
| Month | Avg high / low | Water temp | Rental cost (vs July) | Island activity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 70°F / 50°F | 65°F | 55-65% | Thanksgiving surge then drops off; restaurants all open |
| December | 62°F / 43°F | 58°F | 40-50% (Christmas week 60-70%) | Harbour Town holiday lights; bike rentals and most restaurants fully open |
| January | 58°F / 41°F | 55°F | 40-45% | Quietest month; a few restaurants close 1 night/week; full gym and activity access |
| February | 61°F / 43°F | 55°F | 40-48% | Valentine's week bump; whale-watching charters from Savannah; golf conditioning improves |
| March | 67°F / 49°F | 60°F | 55-65% (spring break surge wks 3-4) | Course conditioning peak; bird migration; spring break March 14-28 surges rates |
November on Hilton Head
The transition month. First two weeks feel like the best of the year: 70°F afternoons, empty beaches, light tourism, full restaurant scene. Thanksgiving week itself surges (villa rates lift 60-70%, restaurants book out 2-3 weeks ahead, but it's still 40% below July). See the Hilton Head Thanksgiving planning page. After Thanksgiving, the island empties and pricing drops into true winter mode.
December on Hilton Head
The quiet holiday month. 62°F days, 43°F nights. Harbour Town lights up for the holidays. Christmas week is surprisingly affordable (lower than Thanksgiving) and the island is calm. New Year's week books out; book 2+ months ahead for a NYE villa. January through March is cheaper, but December has the holiday atmosphere that snowbird couples often want. Restaurants all open; a handful reduce to 6 nights/week.
January on Hilton Head
The cheapest month. 58°F average high, 41°F low. Ocean swimming is out (55°F water). Villa rates bottom at 40-45% of July peak. Some restaurants (3-4) close Mondays; everything else runs full hours. Great month for long bike rides (cool, dry), Pinckney Island hiking (bird migration peak), gym-plus-golf days, and reading-on-the-porch weeks. Most 30-day rentals we place are in January.
February on Hilton Head
Slight warm-up. 61°F average high. Valentine's week creates a mini-spike in couples' rentals (book early). Whale-watching charters run out of Savannah in late February as the gray-whale migration passes offshore. Course conditioning noticeably improves toward month's end. February is the second-cheapest month behind January and often the right month for snowbirds who want slightly warmer weather.
March on Hilton Head
The winter exit month. 67°F average high, 49°F low. Week 1-2: still winter pricing and light crowds. Week 3-4: spring break surge (mid-March through early April), rates lift 60-70%, villa inventory tightens fast. If you want the “end of winter” feel at winter pricing, book March 1-15. If you want the warmth of early spring without spring break crowds, book March 8-15 specifically.
What stays open in winter
The “is anything open?” question is the single most-asked question we get from first-time snowbird clients. The honest answer:
Restaurants
All major restaurants stay open year-round. Skull Creek, Michael Anthony's, Red Fish, Hudson's, Salty Dog Cafe, all open every month. Of the top 30 island restaurants, 3-4 close one night a week (usually Monday or Tuesday) from January through mid-February. Nothing shuts down for the winter; the island has enough year-round residents to sustain the scene.
Golf
All 12+ courses stay open year-round. Winter greens are slower (seasonal dormancy) but playable through March. Green fees drop 30-40% below summer. Harbour Town remains open to Sea Pines Resort guests with standard priority. Tee sheets are noticeably less crowded. See the Hilton Head golf courses ranked.
Activities
Bike rentals (Hilton Head Bicycle), kayak tours (Outside Hilton Head, 7 a.m. slot still best), Coastal Discovery Museum, Sea Pines Forest Preserve, Harbour Town Lighthouse, and Pinckney Island all run year-round. Seasonal closures: one or two of the 6 sunset-sail operators reduce winter schedule (Captain Mark runs year-round; others may not); surf school is out until May.
Gyms, groceries, medical
Sea Pines Racquet Club, Palmetto Dunes tennis complex, and Lifestyle Family Fitness all run winter programs. Hilton Head Hospital on Hospital Center Blvd is the full-service medical facility (24/7 ER). Walgreens, CVS, and a full Publix grocery are all year-round. Delivery via Instacart and DoorDash runs every day.
Monthly snowbird rental economics
What a 30/60/90-day Hilton Head winter rental actually costs:
| Property type | 30 days | 60 days | 90 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2BR interior villa, mid-island | $2,800-3,500 | $5,200-6,600 | $7,500-9,500 |
| 3BR oceanfront villa, Palmetto Dunes | $5,500-6,800 | $10,200-12,500 | $14,800-18,000 |
| 3BR oceanfront villa, Sea Pines | $6,200-7,500 | $11,500-14,000 | $16,500-20,000 |
| 2BR Harbour Town villa | $5,000-6,000 | $9,200-11,200 | $13,500-16,500 |
| Shelter Cove marina condo, 2BR | $3,200-4,000 | $5,800-7,400 | $8,400-10,800 |
| Palmetto Bluff inn room (Montage) | $11,000-13,500 | $21,500-26,000 | $32,000-38,000 |
Monthly vs weekly: a 30-day rental runs roughly 2.5-3x the weekly rate (not 4x). Rental companies offer monthly-rate discounts to lock inventory during winter. Utilities, cleaning, and taxes typically add 10-15% on top. Most villa owners require first month upfront plus a security deposit.
Hilton Head winter snowbird logistics
Payment structure
Most winter long-stays bill as: 25-50% at booking, remainder 30 days before arrival. Some owners bill month-by-month for 90+ day stays. Always get a written lease for stays over 28 days (it's required by state short-term-rental law anyway, and your rights are stronger under a lease).
Cancellation flexibility
Winter long-stay cancellation policies are more flexible than summer. Most allow cancellation up to 60 days out with a partial refund, and some allow shifting dates without penalty. Always confirm in writing before booking.
Utilities and wifi
Included in most rates. Double-check WiFi speed before booking if you're working remotely; speeds vary wildly (some villas run 50 Mbps, others 500+). Ask for a speed test screenshot if it matters to your week.
Delivery, services, mail
Grocery delivery (Instacart, Publix, Harris Teeter) runs daily. Amazon delivers reliably in 1-2 days. USPS General Delivery works if you need a temporary mailing address; better to have mail forwarded to a local P.O. Box if your stay exceeds 30 days. Cleaning services are bookable a la carte; most long-stay rentals include one mid-stay cleaning.
Best winter activities by month
- November: Thanksgiving restaurants (book by Nov 1), holiday lights preview at Harbour Town, peak fall bird migration at Pinckney Island.
- December: Holiday lights throughout Harbour Town, Christmas Eve service at the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, beach bonfires on Forest Beach.
- January: Long bike rides (cool, dry), Sea Pines Forest Preserve hikes, gym-plus-golf days, indoor cooking and wine projects in the villa.
- February: Valentine's dinners (book 2 weeks out), whale-watching from Savannah, kayaking Broad Creek at low tide.
- March: Bird migration, golf in peak condition, beach walks warming up, spring break planning if you're staying through April.
Hilton Head winter guide: FAQ
- Is Hilton Head worth visiting in the winter?
- For snowbirds, remote workers, and couples who want a quiet mild-weather escape, yes. Days run 55-68°F, the island is genuinely quiet, and villa rates are 50-55% below summer peak. For beach-first trips where pool weather matters, pick a warmer destination or wait until May.
- What's the weather like on Hilton Head in January?
- Average high 58°F, average low 41°F. Sunny about two-thirds of days. Hard freezes (below 32°F) happen one to three nights per month. Snow is a once-every-10-years event. You'll wear a jacket at sunset and a sweater most days. Ocean swimming is out (water averages 55°F).
- How much does a monthly rental cost on Hilton Head?
- A 2BR interior villa runs $2,800-3,500 for 30 days in winter. A 3BR oceanfront villa in Palmetto Dunes or Sea Pines runs $5,500-7,500. Harbour Town villas and Palmetto Bluff stays run higher. Utilities, cleaning, and taxes typically add 10-15% on top. For a full breakdown see the Hilton Head winter rental planner.
- What's open on Hilton Head in January?
- All major restaurants, all 12+ golf courses, bike rentals, kayak tours, Coastal Discovery Museum, Sea Pines Forest Preserve, Harbour Town Lighthouse, grocery stores, and medical facilities run year-round. A handful of restaurants (3-4 of 30 top spots) close one night a week. Nothing major shuts for the winter.
- Can you swim in the ocean on Hilton Head in winter?
- No, not comfortably. Water temperature averages 55°F in January-February. You can walk the beach, bike the hard-packed sand, and kayak without an issue, but swimming requires a wetsuit that most visitors don't bring. Early-season swimming starts in April (67°F water); full swim season is May-October.
- Is Hilton Head a good snowbird destination compared to Florida?
- Different rather than better. Hilton Head is cooler (55-68°F in January vs 75°F in south Florida) and quieter, with fewer tourists and 50-60% lower rental rates than Naples, Marco Island, or south Florida beach towns. If you want 80°F pool weather, Florida wins. If you want mild days, empty bike paths, and significantly lower costs, Hilton Head is the right pick.
- How long do most snowbirds stay on Hilton Head?
- The most common winter long-stay we book is 30 days in January or February. About 30% of our snowbird clients do 60-day stays, and 15% do 90-day stays. Under 14 days is too short to amortize the travel effort; over 90 days has South Carolina tax implications worth discussing with your accountant.
- Can I golf on Hilton Head in winter?
- Yes, all 12+ courses stay open year-round. Winter greens are slower (seasonal dormancy) and green fees run 30-40% below summer. Conditioning is actually excellent in February-March because cool nights firm the greens. Tee sheets are open; Harbour Town still requires Sea Pines Resort priority. See the Hilton Head golf courses ranked.
- What should I pack for Hilton Head in winter?
- Jeans, long-sleeve tees, a sweater, a windbreaker for beach walks, waterproof shoes, a light rain shell, and one dinner-out outfit. A swimsuit is optional; villa pools and hot tubs are usable some days. Flip-flops you probably won't wear except on 65°F afternoons. Packlist weighs less than summer; no beach gear needed.
- Are there snowbird communities on Hilton Head?
- Yes, informally. Palmetto Dunes, Sea Pines, and Shelter Cove all have substantial winter long-stay populations, with pickleball leagues, weekly happy hours, and tennis round-robins that visitors can join. Contact the property management company or HOA of your rental for local schedules.
